Abuja – Plans are under way between Nigeria and Uganda to trade in dairy products and fish.
The
Ugandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Kagimu Maurice, said the trade in
these products would enhance the volume of economic activities between
both countries as they were already trading in coffee.
“The areas we want to cooperate in are mainly coffee, milk and fish.
“The demand for fish and dairy products in Nigeria is high, considering her population of 160 million.
“We are working on these areas so that we can substitute some of these products which are coming from outside Africa.
"I
have approached the chambers of commerce both in Abuja and in Lagos and
we have discussed that issue and are still in the process of
discussing.
“What has been suggested is that we do part of the processing in Uganda and the final processing in Nigeria.”
He said that one of the major challenges in the trade between both countries was transportation of goods to either country.
"So, we have a two-way (transaction) because taking raw coffee from Uganda also don’t benefit much,'' he said.
The
envoy said that the Bilateral Air Service Agreement between both
countries was ongoing and would be concluded soon to ensure enhanced
flow of trade between both countries.
Talks between the two
countries were held for the practical implementation of the bilateral
air service agreement between Uganda Civil Aviation Authority and Arik
Air which was designated by the government of Nigeria.
"The
implementation of this agreement, together with the economic viability,
is being studied by Arik Air. It is in the pipeline so that we have
direct flights, that will help.’’
