FG Formally Requests UN To Blacklist Boko Haram

boko-haram-jonathanA United Nations diplomat has told the Voice of America (VOA) that the Nigerian government has formally requested the United Nations Security Council Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee to blacklist the Boko Haram group after the kidnapping of 276 school girls in Chibok, Borno State, over a month ago.
The diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said if there is no objection by the 15-member council committee which operates by consensus, Boko Haram will be sanctioned tomorrow (today).
“It is difficult to object to such a request by the concerned country”, the council diplomat said.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had refused to seek international assistance in fighting the Boko Haram menace until the recent abduction of the girls from a secondary school in North-East Nigeria forced President Goodluck Jonathan to request and accept foreign intervention.
Speaking further, the diplomat noted that the document submitted by the Nigerian government to support its blacklisting request, made reference to the August 2011 bombing of the UN headquarters in Abuja, which claimed many lives.
Boko Haram, which Western governments said is linked to the international terror group al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for the abduction of the school girls as well as several other deadly attacks on Nigerians.

Jos Explosions: PDP Postpones Presidential Flag-Off Of Ekiti Governorship Campaign

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed, by one week, the presidential flag-off of Ekiti State governorship campaign slated for Thursday.
This is contained a statement signed by the party`s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh, on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the postponement is in honour of the victims of Tuesday’s explosions in Jos.
No fewer than 75 persons lost their lives to the two blasts which occurred in the central area of Jos.
“Our hearts reach out to the victims and their families, and we pray that Nigerians unite as we say no to terrorism”, it said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Goodluck Jonathan was to lead PDP chieftains to Ekiti to present the party`s flag to the state governorship candidate, Mr Ayodele Fayose, at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium.
Ekiti governorship election is scheduled for June 21.
The party expressed the hope that kidnappers of more than 200 schoolgirls from the Government Girls’ College, Chibok, Borno, would soon release them unconditionally.
The students were abducted on April 14 by the Boko Haram sect (NAN)

Senate Endorses Extension Of Emergency Rule With Eight Conditions

 victor_ndoma-egba
The Senate yesterday joined the House of Representatives in approving President Goodluck Jonathan’s request to extend the emergency rule in three states in the Northeast by six months.
The endorsement by the Red Chamber was, however, with eight conditions which it said must be observed in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
It would be recalled that the Northern Senators Forum had last week vowed to stop the extension of the emergency rule, saying that the initial one year period had not yielded the expected results.
However, before the upper chamber threw its weight behind the extension, it held over four hours closed door session to thrash out contentious issues especially those raised by opposing Senators.
After the meeting, during plenary, senators unanimously endorsed the adoption of the motion to extend the emergency rule.
In his remarks, Senate President David Mark lauded the lawmakers for their patriotism in approving the extension of the emergency rule.
He said: “The Senate in closed session deliberated on the motion before us on the extension of state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe and agreed that we will approve it in the plenary”.
He noted that it was agreed during the closed session that certain issues be resolved as “quickly as possible”.
Mark said: “I want to thank you all for this painstaking discussion that took place and the subsequent approval.
“Let me also say emphatically here that we have requested that certain issues be resolved as quickly as possible. We stand shoulder to shoulder and strongly behind our colleagues from all the states affected.
“We take this in the same vein that we are equally affected and that this is a national issue and not a sectional issue in any form”.
Recall that the Senate had last week deferred debate on President Jonathan’s request to allow for “adequate consultation”.
Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba said the Senate arrived at the eight conditions based on which the extension of the State of Emergency was approved.
Ndoma-Egba said: “Senate welcomes and endorse the support of the International Community in respect of efforts to rescue the abducted Chibok students and urge Mr. President to expand the cooperation and collaboration to the overall arrest of the ugly incidence of terrorism in Nigeria.
“Senate calls for proper kitting and arming of our Armed Forces deployed to arrest the insurgency and adequate welfare care for troops.
“Urge that full military operation be undertaken on sustained basis to rout out the insurgents.
“Special recruitments into the Armed Forces of screened and vetted youth particularly those in the Civilian JTF (Joint Task Force) who will receive emergency training and deployed in the troubled zone in order to beef up the strength of our troops and win hearts and minds of the locals.
“The Federal Government in conjunction with the state governments to come up with an Economic Marshal Plan to revive the economy of the economically and educationally backward parts of our country. Federal Government to seek and secure multi-lateral support for such Marshal Plan.
“The Ministers of Defence, Police Affairs, Service Chiefs, National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Director General (DG) State Security Service (SSS) to report to the Senate on monthly basis progress made in combating the insurgency on the basis of which Senate can take any decision it reconsiders necessary including but not limited to the revocation of the declaration of State of Emergency.
“Urge Mr. President to prepare and submit to the National Assembly supplementary budget to meet any establishment financial requirements needed to combat the insurgency.
“Urge Mr. President to immediately approve intervention funds to the affected states for development”.
It was, however, gathered that the ninth condition contained in the motion paper read by the Senate Leader, which states: “The continuation of service of any Service Chief, GOC or Field Commander should be tied to his or her operational performances in combating the insurgency, protection of civilians and upholding the fundamental human rights of civilians”, was omitted by Ndoma-Egba even though it was listed in the motion paper.
The motion on the extension of the emergency rule entitled: “Extension of State of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States”, which the Senators must have discussed during the closed door session before it was read by Ndoma-Egba, states that: “The Senate notes that on Thursday, 7th November, 2013, the Senate considered and approved the extension of the period of the state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States.
“Aware that by virtue of the provisions of section 305 (6) (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the proclamation will elapse after a period of six months from the date of approval, except the period is extended by the National Assembly.
“Further aware that the President, in a letter of 13th May, 2014, requested for a further extension of the period of the state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
“Recognising that the security situation in the three states remains daunting in the face of persistent attacks by members of the Boko Haram sect on civilian and military targets with alarming casualty rates.
“Cognisant of the provision of Section 305 (6) (c) which states inter alia: ‘Provided that the National Assembly may, before the expiration of the period of six months aforesaid, extend the period for the proclamation of the State of Emergency to remain in force from time to time for a further period of six months by resolution passed in like manner’;
“Recalled that the Ministers of Defence and Police Affairs, Service Chiefs and Director-General, State Security Service, Inspector-General of Police and the National Security Adviser had briefed  the Senate on the State of security in the affected states;
“Accordingly resolved to: Approve the extension of the Proclamation of a State of Emergency as contained in the Emergency Powers (General) Regulations, /013 effective in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States to remain in force for a further period of six months in accordance with the terms, conditions, content and context as earlier passed by the National Assembly”.

Plateau CP Confirms Death Toll From Twin Explosions In Jos Now 75

police
The death toll in the twin explosions at the Jos Terminus Market on Tuesday afternoon has risen to 75, according to Police Commissioner Chris Olakpe.
“I have directed the police medical officer to go round the hospitals and that is the figure he has confirmed so far,’’ Olakpe told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday at the scene of the explosions.
He said 44 bodies were at the Plateau Specialists Hospital, 25 at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, while the rest were deposited at the Bingham University and Yellow hospitals.
The position of the police commissioner contrasts sharply with the figure provided by the emergency management agencies which put the death toll at 118 as of Tuesday.
Olakpe had initially said 46 persons died in the twin explosions on Tuesday.
The police boss added, however, that the figures could rise as the security agencies had intensified the search for more casualties around the vicinities of the Terminus Market.
He said no one would be allowed around the market area as it had been cordoned off.
“I have asked my personnel to chase away anyone found around the vicinities because anti-bomb experts are combing everywhere. It is after such exercise that we shall decide whether it is safe to visit the market”, he said.
NAN reports that the two explosions hit the market around 3pm on Tuesday with the second going off after an interval of 14 minutes.

MOHAMMED BUHARI
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested one Mohammed Buhari, said to be an adopted son of a former military Head of State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Mohammadu Buhari over an alleged N20m fraud.
According to a report by Sahara Reporters, Buhari was arrested over a “transaction that has the trappings of voodoo investment scheme”.
He allegedly obtained N20 million from one Mrs Florence Nwokocha, with the aim of investing in a lucrative oil and gas business with promises of mouth watery returns to the investor.
According to the report, Buhari was allegedly introduced to the lady by his account officer at Ecobank Plc and he agreed to pay 30 percent annual interest on the sum to Nwokocha.
It was learnt that once the money was transferred, Buhari withdrew all the money but never fulfilled his agreement of paying any interest to the woman.
Sources at the EFCC informs that the suspect claims he ran into trouble after he lost the bank guarantee, which he secured from another new generation bank.
According to sources, Buhari claimed that the bank voided the guarantee on the ground that the branch of the bank that processed it was not competent to do so.
Buhari is still in the custody of the anti-graft agency as investigations in the case continue.

GOV. IDRIS WADA OF KOGI (L) IN A HANDSHAKE WITH THE EMIR OF ZAZZAU, ALHAJI SHEHU IDRIS, AT THE PUBLIC PRESENTATION OF A BOOK TITLED “FASTING ACCORDING TO ISLAMIC LAW” IN KADUNA ON SUNDAY (18/5/14). WITH THEM IS GOV. MUKHTAR YERO OF KADUNA STATE.
As Nigerians prepare to go to the polls in 2015 to elect leaders in the forthcoming general elections, former military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida yesterday warned politicians to desist from engaging in acts capable of setting the country on the path of anarchy.
The former military president, who gave the warning in Kaduna while speaking at the presentation ceremony of two books written by the Director-General of the National Teachers Institute (NTI), Kaduna, Dr Aminu Ladan Sharehu, said politicians must not heat up the polity in their bid to gain acceptance.
He added that “politics is a game that produces a winner and not all contestants will emerge victorious at the polls; therefore, losers must learn to accept defeat with grace and prepare for another race someday”.
Represented by Brigadier General Dantsoho Mohammed (rtd), IBB as he is fondly called, said that as the campaign for 2015 gathers steam, an overheated polity will produce nothing other than chaos in the land.
His words, “I wish to advise politicians to be careful and responsible as they start their campaign train; Nigerians deserve nothing less than the dividends of democracy that will grant minimum comfort for better quality life.
“This is what is required to take the youths off the streets, restore the confidence of the disenchanted and provide succour for the poverty-stricken masses of this country. This is what is needed to check the menace perpetrated by militants and Boko Haram insurgency”.
Speaking at the event, Gov. Mukhtar Ramalan Yero of Kaduna State said no amount of fighting or violence can elevate one to political office, but only God, and pleaded for peaceful coexistence among the people of the state and the nation in general.
Speaking earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar tasked people with Islamic religious knowledge to imbibe the culture of educating the common folks with the basic tenets of Islam wherever they find themselves.
The Sultan, who was represented by the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, noted that Nigeria is a country with diverse cultures and religious backgrounds where the natives speak different languages, and called on Muslims to propagate Islam.
In his welcome address, the author of the books – “Fasting According to Islamic Law” and its Hausa version, “Matsayin Azumi A Shari’ar Musulunci” – Dr. Sharehu, said lack of knowledge of Arabic is no more an excuse not to learn the basic facts and principles of Islam.
According to the NTI boss, fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam but it must be done as stipulated in the Qur’an, which is why the book was written to enlighten the Muslim faithful on the right way of fasting.

Chibok Abduction: One Million People Have Signed Petitions – Gordon Brown

Former UK Prime Minister and UN Special Envoy on Education, Mr. Gordon Brown, has announced that one million people have now signed petitions, and a month from now, on June 16, the International Day of the African Child, there will be vigils in every continent of the world for the 200 plus schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram.
“In 20 countries, young people will take over national parliaments to highlight the girls’ fate – and that of the 57 million other children who cannot go to school,” he said.
In a statement issued at the weekend, Brown said the Nigerian government and the country’s citizens deserve the fullest international support in tackling terrorism, noting: “They have been victims of a massive but under-reported effort by a few extremists to split the country.
“Two weeks ago, in Abuja, Boko Haram bombed and killed dozens. In the past four years, the group’s attacks on Nigerians have taken more than 4,000 lives, including 171 teachers massacred in separate incidents in Borno State. Only two months ago, seven teachers were assassinated, and their family members, including wives and children, were abducted.
“None of us can stand by and endlessly witness schools shut down, girls cut off from education, and parents living in fear for their daughters’ lives.
“Those who murder or abduct children should be made aware that international authorities will punish them. And, while we cannot end terrorism overnight, we can show determination to stand up to it by making schools safe. Every child is precious, and every child deserves the right to learn.”
He added that under the Safe Schools Initiative launched during the World Economic Forum on Africa, the promoters led by Nigerian businessmen plan to rebuild the girls’ own school in Chibok and to make the roughly 5,000 schools in northern Nigerian safe from terrorist attacks.
However, he said in the short term, Nigeria needs to make its schools safer and more secure from terrorist attacks, and a safe-schools plan is being created by the Nigerian authorities to ensure that girls no longer fear going to school in the country’s six North-east states.
“Guards, fortifications, and communications equipment must be installed. And, in the longer term, the authorities must craft a new plan to educate Nigeria’s ten million out-of-school girls and boys,” he said.

Click for Full Image Size FUNKE AKINDELE

Though her marriage to Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede hit the rocks within a very short period (about one year), Funke Akindele tops the list of female celebrities who got married to a second hand husband. Mr. Oloyede, aka Kenny Doo, is a Lagos based polygamous businessman who had a wife and kids before the Jenifa star got married to him. Funke’s decision to marry Kenny Doo was severely criticised by many who wondered why she would, settle for a man who had so much baggage. This was a man that was widely reported to have had several children from different women, a fact that was no secret to Funke.

She, however, stuck to her guns and had a well attended society wedding in Lagos on May 26, 2012.

Sadly, her critics were proven right as she admitted after their break up 14 months later that the marriage developed problems just two months into it. She has since moved on and remains unmarried till now.

Lovely Okojie revealed that she married Prince Odianosen in Regio – Emilia, Italy, back in 2006, and remained his legal wife. She even went as far as contacting Christ Embassy Church to demand that the marriage be stopped, a demand the church turned down.

Lovely Okojie lamented, “…he’s busy in Nigeria planning to wed Mercy Johnson, abandoning me and our children. Fellow women, is this fair? So with all the single guys out there, Mercy could not find herself one. How can a woman not care that she’s destroying the home of another woman, all in the name of getting married desperately. I’m in terrible pains. What do I tell my children?”

The rest is history as the marriage went as planned, with the couple currently enjoying their marriage with a baby girl to show for their effort.

Incessant Boko Haram attacks in the state over the years was said to have been seen as a golden opportunity by some government officials to siphon public funds, but concerned indigenes of the state have now petitioned the EFCC over various ccorrupt practices by the government officials.

2015: We Can Embarrass You As An Igbo Man If You Contest Against Jonathan – Ohaneze Ndigbo Warns Aspirants From S/East

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has asked all politicians of Igbo extraction not to join the 2015 presidential race, if President Goodluck Jonathan decides to seek reelection.
Dr Chris Eluemunoh, the Chairman of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Anambra chapter, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Awka.
He said that the Igbo people were satisfied with the Jonathan administration and would support his reelection bid, if he indicates interest to do so.
Eluemunoh said that Igbo people had benefited more basic infrastructure and political appointments than under any administration since Independence.
“Any government like Jonathan’s administration that shares national resources equitably needed to be encouraged to stay in office and perfect the administration programme to a logical conclusion.
“It is on this stance that I commend Mr President and pledge our loyalty to him. I urge any Igbo man nursing the ambition to contest as president to drop it now, for us to speak with one voice.’’
Eluemunoh said that “any Igbo man that worked against the President would be fighting the Igbo race because for now the Igbos have no national political platform under which they should contest.
“How do you present a candidate when our own brother is there? Ohanaeze has said that we will pull our support for Jonathan now and in 2015, so, there is no vacancy in Aso Rock.
“Ohanaeze is the voice of the Igbo nation. We cannot fight anybody, we cannot bite anybody but we can embarrass you as an Igbo man if you contest.
“We resolved that we should allow our own brother to go for second tenure. Who else can do better than what Jonathan is doing for the Igbo”.
He also commiserated with the Federal Government and the Judiciary over the death of Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, who died on May 4.
